Funding News

NJ Dept. Of Treasury Funds New Bus

Thanks to the political positioning of Asemblywoman and Trustee Joan Quigley and Assemblyman Louis manzo, funding in the amount of $30,000 was secured from New Jersey Department of the Treasury for the purpose of purchasing a new school bus for the Boys & Girls Club.

NJ Dept. of Labor/Bank of America Youth Employment Center

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Hudson County was selected by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Bank of America to open a Youth Employment Center for 13 - 18 year olds. Funding in the amount of $123,000 will provide teens the opportunity to participate in Career Exploration Programs that will help them enter the work force and advance from job to career and self-sufficiency at an accelerated pace.

Selected As A Supplemental Education Service Provider

The New Jersey Department of Education selected the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hudson County for the third consecutive year to be a Provider of Supplemental Education for those students attending Category I schools in Jersey City. The Boys & Girls Club was again approved by the Jersey City Public Schools System to serve 200 students at the Boys & Girls Club, 200 at PS #34, and 149 at PS #39. The Boys & Girls Club also provides services to the students who attend Liberty Academy and Schomburg Charter Schools. The Boys & Girls Club will incorporate the Plato Lightspan Achieve Now Program with our Project Learn Program to aggressively address the literacy, reading comprehension and mathematical needs of students referred to us by the school disrtict. The school district will reimburse the Boys & Girls Club $1,756 for every child we serve.

Funding the Dream of Florence Vorhees Park

The Community Development Block Grant Office of the City of Jersey City awarded the Boys & Girls Club grants in the amount of $735,000 for the construction of a park on the vacant lot bordering Grand and Grove Streets. The park will be named in memory of the late Florence Vorhees. Ms. Vorhees and her father were Trustees and huge supporters of the Boys & Girls Club. Her father, John Vorhees was President of the Board of Trustees in 1923.

The park will turn an eyesore into an oasis complete with landspcaping, benches, and two basketball courts. Construction is scheduled to be completed by late spring.

CSBG Funds Supplemental Ed. Program

The Community Services Block Program awarded the Boys & Girls Club a grant in the amount of $35,000 to support the purchasing of the educational materials needed for the intensive Supplemental Education Program for members who attend Category I schools.

NJ Govenor & Legislators Come Through For Boys & Girls Clubs

The Govenor and the State Legislature appropriated $1,500,000.00 for Boys & Girls Clubs in New Jersey. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Hudson County was allocated $79,000 for its' operations. Boys & Girls Clubs are New Jersey's most successful youth development organizations.

NJ After 3 Funds Boys & Girls Club @ PS 34

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Hudson County was again selected to operate a comprehensive after school program for 200 students attending PS 34 at the school. NJ After 3 is providing funding in the amount of $225,684. The Boys & Girls Club received a matching grant in the amount of $80,000 from Boys & Girls Clubs of America. More than 20 professionally trained staff members provide a milieu of services.

Horizon Health Literacy Program

Thanks to a grant in the amount of $15,000 from the Horizon Foundation, the Boys & Girls Club will employ trained teen mentors who will provide weekly one on one reading assistance to Club members ages 6 - 10 years of age. The program will consist of 12 one hour meetings between the mentor and the mentee. All participants will strengthen their reading comprehension and vocabulary skills and increase their understanding of the importance of healthy behaviors through the reading of age appropriate stories on health related topics.

The Provident Bank Foundation Funds Project Learn

The Provident Bank Foundation awarded the Boys & Girls Club a grant in the amount of $10,000 towards the purchase of the LightSpan Achieve Now Program. This innovative curiculum is utilized by more than 300 students at the Boys & Girls Club and PS #39,and 200 at the NJ After 3pm Boys & Girls Club at PS #27.

Selected To Pilot NJ After 3 Initiative AT PS #27!!!!

121 proposals were submitted. 21 were selected. 4 scored 96 out of 100. Yes, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hudson County was one of the 4. The Boys & Girls Club, Hudson County's most successful youth development organization was selected to pilot the Governor's initiative to serve more children after school. The Boys & Girls Club was awarded more than $200,000 per year for three years to conduct a comprehensive after school program for 280 children at the Alfred E. Zampella School - PS #27 in the Jersey City Heights.

NBA/NETS STAR SPONSORS TRAVEL TEAMS

NBA New Jersey Nets star and member of the US Olympic Team, Richard Jefferson, agreed to sponsor the Travel Basketball Team Program. Richard was approached due him displaying himself as an excellent role model. He's articulate, intelligent, and has remained humble.

The sponsorship will include Nike uniforms, sneakers and practice gear, and funding for tourmanment entry fees and travel expenses.

ICAP Garban Intercapital Awards Generous Grant

ICAP Garban Intercapital headquartered on Jersey City's waterfront awarded the Boys & Girls Club a grant in the amount of $75,000. These funds were made possible through the generosity of Garban intercapital's annual charity day. This gift is to strenthen our capacity and support our growth strategy to serve more children.

Beaumont Foundation Funds Operation Connect Tech Center

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Hudson County has been selected to receive an Operation Connect Technology Center. The grant in the amount of $23,000, has beenmade possible through Boys & Girls Clubs of America's partnership with the Beaumont Foundation of America, and supportfrom the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice, and a software gift from Microsoft.

William E. Simon Foundation: (Family Advocacy Network) FAN C

The William E. Simon Foundation awarded the Boys & Girls Club a $53,000 grant to conduct the FAN Club, a project to be conducted in conjunction with SMART Moves, a drug prevention program. The goal of the program is to strengthen families by creating a bond between children and their parents, reducing parental isolation, providing for families to participate in pleasurable activities together, helping parents influence their children to lead drug free lives, and providing social and instructional support of families.

Taco Bell Funds Keystone Clubs

The Taco Bell Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant in support of the Boys & Girls Clubs' Keystone Club Citizenship & Leadership Development Program. The funding will provide the oppportunity for our high school-age leadership development program to attend the National Keystone Conference in the spring of 2004.

Keystone Clubs conduct valuable community service projects, meet on a weekly basis, and elect officers.
