THE ROAD TO STEAM CITY STARTS HERE
We are kicking off our campaign to support STEAM City at Whitlock Mills, an extraordinary opportunity to expand services to youth in Jersey City. The developers of Whitlock Mills, a 34-building residential development, in the historic Lafayette district of Jersey City, is providing space in the vintage, turn-of-the-19th century Powerhouse building, designated for sole use by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hudson County. This project will incorporate Makerspace and performing arts activities in a space slated to open in January, 2021. As the newest Unit addition to the BGCHC family, STEAM City at Whitlock Mills, an affordable housing community for low-moderate income families in the Bergen-Lafayette section of Jersey City, will allow our organization to extend our services to an additional 100+ youth in our community.
STEAM City is designed for youth to be creators, rather than consumers of technology and science, by providing a space, supplies, equipment, and instruction designed to promote STEAM skills as well as the design thinking process, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. “The turn of the 21st century has signaled a shift in the types of skillsets that have real, applicable value in a rapidly advancing world. In this landscape, creativity, design, and engineering are making their way to the forefront of educational considerations, as tools such as robotics, and web-based 3D modeling applications become accessible to more people.
